Antigua and Barbuda is one of the most beautiful islands in the Caribbean Sea. Last year after the Atlantic crossing we spend a few days there. I wrote about how it felt to see Antigua after a long and exhausting sailing trip in this post yesterday and decided to write more about Antigua itself today.
The island has a great nature. All around is covered by green and beautiful beaches. It has 365 beaches so you can enjoy a new beach each day of the year.
Here are some basic and interesting information about this beautiful island.
- Since 1667 Antigua and Barbuda is a British Colony. Thus Elizabeth II is the present Queen of Antigua and Barbuda.
- Its populations is more than 80.000 people. But every year about 250,000 people visit Antigua and Barbuda for beaches, diving and similar activities.
- Despite the fact that it is a small island , Antigua has produced some of the world’s best cricketers including Viv Richards, Richie Richardson, Andy Roberts and Curtly Ambrose.
- The words ‘hammock’, ‘hurricane’, ‘tobacco’, ‘barbecue’ and ‘canoe’ all are derived from the Taino language, spoken by people in the Caribbeans, of which Antigua and Barbuda are also a part.
- Corn and sweet potatoes are the most used ingredients of Antigua and Barbuda cuisine.
